To consider the issues related to physical impairments in high data rate optical transmission links and WDM networks like: chromatic & polarization dispersion, fiber nonlinearities.
Designing and simulation of high data rate in presence of physical impairments and their compensation.
Performance investigations of high data rate systems and networks using performance metrics BER, Q-factor and eye diagram etc.

Specific objectives of the project:

To investigate the dispersion and nonlinear factors degrading the overall performance of the optical communication systems and networks.
To analyze the impact of higher-order dispersion effects on WDM systems and networks.
To investigate the performance of WDM based systems and networks in the presence of homodyne cross talk.
To develop a wavelength re-routing algorithm for the dynamic traffic in WDM networks.

Ph.D. I have supervised one Ph.D. thesis under this project on the topic “Performance Analysis of Broadband Optical Communication Systems and Networks with Dispersion and Fiber Nonlinearities” to R S Kaler, Punjab Technical University.

Specific objectives of the project:

Investigations of various multiplexing techniques for optical communication systems and networks.
To study the criteria for WDM optical communication systems and to design parameters like calculation of channel separation, ISI-, crosstalk- and dispersion-calculation etc.
To investigate the dispersion compensation technique by differential time delay for broadband optical communication. Calculation of phase deviation and figure of merit will be taken up with a view of its implementation at laboratory scale.
To investigate the pulse compression technique for high bit-rate optical communication systems.
Development of bit delay (skew) correction algorithm for byte-wide WDM systems and its hardware development.
Design and development of video, voice, and data link using optical fiber.
To investigate the design and its development criteria for WDM based Optical Line Terminal Equipment (OLTE).

Ph.D. I have completed my Ph.D. on the topic “Studies of Broadband Optical Communication Systems and Networks” under the supervision of Dr. R A Agarwala and Dr. R K Sinha.
